【007号は二度死ぬ】You Only Live Twice
イアン・フレミングの小説『007号は二度死ぬ』の題名は、フレミングが日本滞在中に「松尾芭蕉の俳句のスタイルを真似て」書いた英語の詩に由来している。この詩は「人生は一度きり」という言葉をもじったもので、
人生は二度しかない
一度目は生まれたとき
そして今一度は死に直面したとき
といった一節を以って人生の奥深さを表現している。フレミングは日本の文化や美意識に深く感銘を受け、その一つとして松尾芭蕉の俳句に触れた。芭蕉の俳句が持つ簡潔さ、そしてその中に込められた深い意味合いが、フレミングの創作意欲を刺激したようである。『007号は二度死ぬ』は、日本の風土、文化、そしてそこに生きる人々を背景に、スパイ小説としてのスリルと冒険を描いているが、松尾芭蕉の存在が小説に日本独自の文化的深みを与えている。
小説のプロットは、暗号解読機「マジック44」を手に入れるために来日したボンドは、情報収集のために銀座で諜報員ヘンダーソンと会い、日本の公安調査庁長官タイガー田中から、九州にあるドクター・シャッターハントの「自殺の庭園」に潜入・暗殺を依頼される。ボンドは三重県で日本文化の特訓を受け、海女のキッシー鈴木の助けを借りて、庭園のある九州の古城へと潜入、ドクターの正体、スペクターの首領エルンスト・スタヴロ・ブロフェルドと対峙する、というものだ。
イアン・フレミングが「007号は二度死ぬ」を書くにあたって来日したのは1962年。二度目の来日となる今回の日本滞在は12日間である。案内役は朝日新聞の斎藤寅郎(タイガー)と、サンデータイムズのオーストラリア人特派員リチャード・ヒューズ。実取材しに基づいたこの小説にはリアルな記述がたくさんある。三重県のコンテンツとしては、海女、伊勢海老、水中翼船(今はない)、ミキモト真珠島、伊勢神宮の外宮、松阪牛、和田金牧場、および松尾芭蕉と彼の俳句。また、ブロフェルドの拠点として海に囲まれた城の描写がある。
蒲郡から三重県の鳥羽港に到着したボンドは、この町で御木本幸吉の像を見る。フレミングが物語のヒロイン、キッシー鈴木のモデルとして海女を視察するために、ミキモト真珠島を訪れていたからである。また、小説の時系列からみると、ボンドが活きたままの伊勢海老料理に驚くシーンも鳥羽市の旅館のようだ。が、フレミングが実際に活伊勢海老料理(いけづくり)と遭遇したのは蒲郡である。
最もリアルな場面の一つは伊勢神宮のシーンで、もう一つは松阪牛の肥育を体験するところ。背景とキャラクターが活写されている。例えば、第10章の高等科では、
タイガーとボンドは、神宮最大の神殿である有名な伊勢の外宮の参道の巨大な杉のかげに立って、写真機をぶら下げた参詣人をながめていた。タイガーがいう。「もういいだろう。あの連中と連中の動作はよく見たはずだ。太陽の女神に祈りをあげていたんだよ。行って、人の注意を引かないようにお詣りしてくるんだ」
ボンドは掃き清められた道を行き、大きな木の鳥居をくぐって神殿の前の人ごみに加わった。はでな赤い着物に黒の冠をかぶったふたりの神官が見守っている。ボンドは神殿に一礼し、賽銭を受けるようにできている金網の上に小銭を投げ、音高く手をたたいて頭を祈るように垂れ、また手をたたいて一礼して退散してきた。
「よくできた」タイガーが言った。「神官のひとりは、あんたに目もくれなかったくらいだ。ほかの連中は振り返ってもみなかったよ。もっと音高く手をたたけばよかったのに。女神様やあんたのご先祖に、この神殿にお詣りしているんだぞと注意を引くようにね。そうすれば、神様たちももっとあんたの祈りに気をつけてくれる。ところで、本当は何て祈った？」
「何も祈らなかったみたいだな。正しい動作の手順を思い出すのに夢中だったので」

この神官の装束は実際とは異なるものの、次にボンドは田中と共にハイヤーで松阪市へ移動、和田金牧場に到着する。
牧童がビールの入っている木箱をかつぎだしてきた。ビールを一本あけてボンドに渡す。タイガーが頭ごなしに言う。「牛に飲ませるんだ」
ボンドはビンを持って大胆に牛のそばによった。牛は頭を上げて、よだれを垂らしながら口をあける。ボンドはその口にビンをつっこんで流しこんだ。牛は大喜びでビンをかじってしまいそうだった。ざらざらした舌でボンドの手を嬉しそうにベロベロなめる。ボンドは頑ばった。タイガーのやり方にはもう慣れていたし、タイガーの課するテストには少なくとも神風特攻隊精神に近いものを示してやろうと決心していたのだった。
牧童がこんどは、水みたいなもののはいったビンをボンドに渡す。タイガーは言った。「そいつは焼酎だ。生のままの強いジンみたいなもんだ。そいつを口に含んで牛の背に吹っかけてやり、マッサージしてすりこんでやるんだ」

この後、ボンドとタイガーは松尾芭蕉と忍者にまつわる伝説の山城を訪れる。ここには日本の公安調査庁が運営する秘密訓練施設があり、忍者の武器博物館もある。この場面の後、芭蕉翁の次の3つの俳句が登場する。

大根からし
秋の風
蘭の香や
てふのつばさに
たき物す
あまの屋は
小海老にまじる
いとど哉
これは、大阪から別府へ向かう関西汽船むらさき丸の船上で、タイガーがボンドに紹介したものである。ボンドはこれに倣って「人生は二度しかない」という冒頭の句を詠んだ。舞台は九州へと移り、鳥羽のミキモトで取材した海女の登場も九州ということなる。

Fleming was deeply impressed by Japanese culture and aesthetic sense, and one of the things he came across was Matsuo Basho's haiku. It is thought that the conciseness of Basho's haiku and the deep meaning contained within them stimulated Fleming's creative desire. "You Only Live Twice" depicts the thrills and adventures of a spy novel set against the backdrop of Japan's climate, culture, and people. The presence of Matsuo Basho gives the novel a uniquely Japanese cultural depth.
The plot of the novel is as follows: Bond comes to Japan to obtain the codebreaker "Magic 44" and meets Henderson in Ginza to gather information. He is then asked by Tiger Tanaka, the director of Japan's Public Security Intelligence Agency, to infiltrate and assassinate Dr. Shatterhunt's "Garden for Suicides" in Kyushu. After receiving intensive training in Japanese culture in Mie Prefecture, Bond, with the help of Ama diver Kissy Suzuki, infiltrates the old castle in Kyushu where the garden is located and confronts the doctor's true identity, Ernst Stavro Blofeld, the leader of SPECTRE.
Ian Fleming came to Japan in 1962 to write "You Only Live Twice". This is his second visit and he will stay in Japan for 12 days. His guides are Saito Torao (Tiger) of Asahi Shimbun and Richard Hughes, an Australian correspondent of The Sunday Times. This novel is full of realistic descriptions because it was based on actual events.
The contents of Mie Prefecture include female divers, spiny lobsters, hydrofoils (now extinct), Mikimoto Pearl Island, Geku of Ise Jingu, Matsusaka beef, Wadakin Ranch, and Matsuo Basho and his haiku. In addition, there is a description of a castle surrounded by the sea as Blofeld's base. (This is probably Toba Castle).
Arriving at Toba Port in Mie Prefecture from Gamagori, Bond sees a statue of Kokichi Mikimoto in this town. This is because Fleming had visited Mikimoto Pearl Island to inspect female divers as a model for the heroine of the story, Kissy Suzuki. In addition, the scene where Bond is surprised by the live spiny lobster dish seems to take place at a ryokan in Toba City, according to the timeline of the novel. However, Fleming actually encountered live spiny lobster dishes in Gamagori.
One of the most realistic scenes is the Ise Jingu Shrine scene, and another is the scene where he experiences fattening Matsusaka beef. The background and characters are well drawn. for example, according to Chapter 10, Advanced Studies:
Tiger and Bond stood in the shade of the avenue of giant cryptomerias and observed the pilgrims, slung with cameras, who were visiting the famous Outer Shrine of Ise, the greatest temple to the creed of Shintoism. Tiger said, "All right. You have observed theses people and their actions. They have been saying prayers to the sun goddess. Go and say a prayer without drawing attention to yourself".
Bond walked over the raked path and through the great wooden archway and joined the throng in front of the shrine. Two priests, bizarre in their red kimonos and black helmets, were watching. Bond bowed towards the shrine, tossed a coin on to the wire-netting designed to catch the offerings, clapped his hands loudly, bent his head in an attitude of prayer, clapped his hands again, bowed and walked out.
"You did well", said Tiger."One of the priests barely glanced at you. The public paid no attention. You should perhaps have clapped your hands more loudly. It is to draw the attention of the goddess and your ancestors to your presence at the shrine. Then they will pay more attention to your prayer. What prayer did you in fact make ?"
"I'me afraid I didn't make any, Tiger. I was concentrating on remembering the right sequence of motions."
Although the priest's attire is different from the real thing, Bond and Tanaka travel to Matsusaka City in a hire car, and they arrive at the Wadakin Ranch.
The herdsman hauled out a crate of beer bottles. He opened one and handed it to Bond. Tiger said peremptorily, "Give it to the cow to drink."
Bond took the bottle and walked boldly up to the cow who raised her head and opened her slavering jaws. Bond trust the bottle between them and poured. The cow almost ate the bottle in its delight and ran its harsh tongue gratefully over Bond's hand. Bond stood his ground. He was getting used to Tiger's ploys by now, and he was determined to show at any an approximation of the kami-kaze spirit whatever test Tiger put him to.
The herdsman now handed Bond a bottle of what appeared to be water. Tiger said, "This is shochu. It is a very raw gin. Fill your mouth with it and spray it over the back of the cow and then massage it into the cow's flesh".
After this, Bond and Tiger visit a mountain castle, which contains references to Matsuo Basho and ninjas. it is home to a secret training facility run by Japan's Public Security Intelligence Agency, and there is also a Ninja Weapon Museum. The following three haiku by Matsuo Basho appear after this scene:
penetrating my body,
the radish bitterness_
an autumnal wind
the scent of orchids,
incensed
on the wings of a butterfly
a fisherman’s hut_
among shrimps
a camel cricket
This was introduced to Bond by Tiger on board the Kansai-Kisen Murasaki Maru on its way from Osaka to Beppu. following this example, Bond wrote the opening line, "You only live twice." The story moves to Kyushu, and the Ama (Diving girl) interviewed in Toba"s MIkimoto also appear in Kyushu.

航空旅客運輸は126億円の赤字、海上旅客運輸も10億円の赤字で、その他サービスも6719億円の赤字。サービス収支全体では1755億円の赤字である。

The travel balance was a surplus of 559.9 billion JPY. this is the only sector that shows promise.
Air passenger transport had a deficit of 12.6 billion JPY, and maritime passenger transport also had a deficit of 1 billion JPY. Other services also had a deficit of 671.9 billion JPY. The overall services balance was in a deficit by 175.5 billion JPY.

Canadians are avoiding travel to the US.
